BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Maritime Patrol Unit has beefed up patrols along a 40-mile stretch of the Mississippi River in the parish.
The added patrols are a first line of defense as the water continues to rise.
"We basically ramped up our normal efforts on the river to make sure we keep everyone safe," said Casey Hicks, spokesperson with EBRSO. "We're really the only public safety entity that's on this river 24/7 and we're actually working on getting a gr ant to get another boat that will be able to extinguish fires."
The river unit is working alongside the coast guard to manage river traffic.
