'Blacked out' mom faces cruelty charge after son shows up at school with bruises

ZACHARY, LA (WAFB) - A woman accused of "blacking out" when she allegedly beat her son severely faces a cruelty charge.

The Zachary Police Department reported Lacey Young, 27, of Zachary, was arrested Thursday.

Young was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of cruelty to a juvenile. No bond was set.

Detectives said they were called out to her 12-year-old child's school because administrators suspected his injuries were the result of abuse. They added the boy had swelling and bruising on the left side of his head, left eye, forehead, right elbow and ear. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. The report stated the injuries were not life-threatening.

Investigators said he showed up at school on Wednesday with bruises on his head and face. They added the boy told them the injuries happened during a football game.

However, according to the probable cause report, a school counselor who had spoken with the boy, told detectives that the boy said his mom "blacked out" on Saturday, threw him on the floor, got on top of him and punched him in the head and face.

The report added the boy said he was beaten for not looking after his 2-year-old brother.
