WEST FELICIANA PARISH, LA (WAFB) - With the rising Mississippi River, DEMCO will turn off the power in a certain area of West Feliciana Parish as a safety measure.
In a release Monday, Officials with Dixie Electric Membership Corporation (DEMCO) said the company will shut down power to customers in the Cat Island Area in West Feliciana Parish sometime this week between Monday and Friday, January 8. This should affect about 45 customers, which are camps and not primary residences, according to the company.
The company will monitor the river levels to determine when exactly to turn off the power.
DEMCO said it is doing this to protect people and property in the affected areas.
According to the release, DEMCO will restore the power once flood waters have gone back to safe levels and any necessary repairs have been made to the company's distribution system.
"The company regrets any inconveniences this may cause, but DEMCO must place the safety of its members as its highest priority," said officials in the news release.
Officials with the company urge customers to take precautions with their property, including food in a refrigerator or freezer that can spoil.
