POINTE COUPEE PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office says a teen has been killed and another was injured in a single car crash that took place Sunday just after midnight.

Deputies say they received a call of an overturned vehicle on a private road at the Ted Davis Trailer Park in Ventress around 12:30 a.m.

"Two juveniles were involved in a wreck, lost control of the vehicle, hit a tree, then hit a large bush and overturned," said Sheriff Bud Torres.

The driver, a 16-year-old from Lakeland and a Livonia High School sophomore, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

His 14-year-old male passenger, a Livonia High freshman, was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The sheriff says the two boys were on their way home after visiting someone at the trailer park and the driver was licensed.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in this crash, however blood test results are pending.

"We don't know if it was just the weather conditions or the rate of speed that he was traveling," said Sheriff Torres.

The sheriff is reminding young drivers and their parents to always put safety first when getting behind the wheel.

"Wear your safety belts, don't text and drive, pay attention to what you're doing," said Sheriff Torres.

"Talk to your children, make sure they understand the responsibility they have when they're driving a vehicle and it can happen so fast."
