Independence police officer arrested by state troopers on felony charges

INDEPENDENCE, LA (WAFB) - The Louisiana State Police arrested an officer after an investigation regarding a criminal complaint received by the Independence Police Department.

Troopers arrested 25-year-old Laquinton Banks Monday on several charges including felony theft. It was a result of a join investigation by the Independence Police and LSP.

Banks served as an officer with the Independence Police for five months before his arrest.

Independence Police received a complaint on Wednesday, December 23. It alleged that Banks was using his position as a police officer to steal money from drivers during traffic stops. After receiving the complaint, Chief Edwards suspended Banks without pay and asked LSP to investigate the allegations.

During the investigation, Troopers found out that Banks has stolen $1,600 from non-English speaking Hispanic males during four different traffic stops.

Banks was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on charges of felony theft, malfeasance in office, and hate crimes

The investigation remains on-going and any subsequent charges will be referred to the Tangipahoa Parish District Attorney's Office.
