Man dies after getting thrown from car that ended up in cane field

POINTE COUPEE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - An investigation is underway into a single-car crash that took a man's life Sunday evening.

Louisiana State Police reported Jeremy Gremillion, 32, of New Roads, was killed in the wreck on LA 978 west of LA 1 in Pointe Coupee Parish around 8 p.m.

Tpr. Bryan Lee with LSP said the initial investigation showed Gremillion was headed east on LA 978 in a 1998 Toyota Camry when the car went off the road in a curve. Troopers said they have not yet determined what caused the car to veer off the road.

Lee added the car flipped several times before eventually stopping in a cane field. He also said Gremillion was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown out of the vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pointe Coupee Parish Coroner's Office.

Investigators said they don't know if impairment was a factor in the crash. Per protocol for all deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, a sample of Gremillion's blood was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The investigation is ongoing.
