Bystanders tackle driver who tried to run after crash, driver charged with 6th DWI

THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) -

A Thibodaux man has been arrested and charged with his 6th DWI after a crash Thursday night. 

Police say 29-year-old Mitchell Carrere crashed his vehicle into a ditch near Caroline Avenue and Thompson Place. 

According to investigators, Carrere tried to run from the crash and took a swing at some bystanders, that is when the bystanders tackled Carrere until police could arrive.

Police believed Carrere was highly intoxicated and after he failed the field sobriety test, he was taken into custody.

Carrere had five previous DWI conviction in Terrebonne Parish since 2006. He is also on parole for DWI until 2021, and his license had been suspended because of his previous DWI convictions.

Mitchell Carrere was booked at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center where he is waiting for his bond to be set. Carrere had a BAC of .196g%.
