The George Rodrigue Foundation visits the students of Dufrocq Elementary

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Students at Dufrocq Elementary received a special treat Thursday morning from the George Rodrigue Foundation.

Jacques Rodrigue of the George Rodrigue Foundation read to the kids and helped them make their own Blue Dog Christmas ornaments.

Dufrocq Elementary is one of 16 Louisiana A-plus schools across the state that is committed to preserving the arts in education.

Rodrigue says that he wants more schools to join the network and help fulfill his late father's legacy.

"So many people think the arts are fluff, but the research shows the exact opposite," says Rodrigue. "When students have arts exposure, they test higher, they have fewer discipline problems and they have a more joyful school environment that makes them want to come to school."

The application period for schools to join the Louisiana A-plus network is now open.
