ST. GABRIEL, LA (WAFB) - Two jailers at a Louisiana prison are now behind bars themselves and because they were already working when the alleged incident happened, officials say they took off their uniforms and put on an orange prisoner suit.
Preshous Hartford, 41, and Monique Jackson, 52, are no longer correctional officers at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in Iberville Parish. Hartford is accused of having sex with an inmate and Jackson was allegedly her lookout.
St. Gabriel Police Chief Kevin Ambeau said his department is investigating the case.
"The major alleged that Precious Hartford was having sexual intercourse with one of the male inmates," Ambeau said.
According to Hartford's arrest report, a supervisor found her in a room allegedly having sex with an inmate. Arrest records also show that Jackson tried to keep the supervisor from going inside that room.
"She wasn't involved in the sexual act, but she was on standby. She was looking out. Major said that she was the only one with access to the building that could have led the inmate in, only one that could have let Ms. Hartford in," Ambeau explained.
He added that at that specific time, Jackson was the only person with keys to the room where Hartford and the inmate were allegedly found.
Ambeau said because the correctional center is within his jurisdiction, the police department often works these kind of cases, but in Jackson's case, she has worked for the correctional center for 21 years.
"She should have known better. She should've known better. They put you through a lot of training. I know in her 21 years, she has training to not to fall for the tricks and games inmates play on you. They have nothing but time," Ambeau stated.
Officials with the Louisiana Department of Corrections were limited in what information they could release, but did say both women are suspended pending the investigation and that they have initiated disciplinary action against the two.
Officials have not released images of the women.
Elayn Hunt Correctional Center is the second largest prison in Louisiana.
