BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The East Baton Rouge coroner has released the name of the man who died in a fire at an apartment complex.
Lenard Grimes, 49, died during the fire in his apartment on North Donmoor just after 11 p.m. Monday.
Baton Rouge Fire Fighters say when they arrived, the second floor of the building was engulfed in flames.
Fire fighters immediately found one victim who was critically injured, but managed to escape the blaze. EMS treated the victim and was taken to the hospital.
All other residents of the apartment building managed to escape unharmed.
Firefighters were able to control the fire and keep it from spreading to other buildings. The fire was contained to the second story of the apartment building. The first floor received heavy water damage.
Investigators say the cause of the fire is undetermined and is under investigation. Investigators with the Baton Rouge Fire Department said the apartment complex had working smoke detectors, but several people, including an inspector, questioned the living conditions.
Fire inspection reports obtained by the 9News Investigators show that at least one inspector turned his findings over to investigators at both the Office of the Louisiana Attorney General and the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.
Red Cross was called and is assisting other residents.
