BAKER, LA (WAFB) - Crews from the Baker Fire Department and Zachary Fire Department responded to a fire in the 3400 block of Wingfield Avenue this afternoon.
The fire started just before 1 p.m.
The homeowner, a 70-year-old woman, returned home from running errands to find flames coming through her roof. She alerted neighbors by honking her car horn for help.
Neighbors say they attempted to rescue her parrot just before they heard the oxygen tank explode.
The woman's dog did make it out alive.
"The fire was contained by crews to one room," says Michael Kimble with the Zachary Fire Department. "There is smoke damage throughout the house and heavy fire damage. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time."
An 80-year-old woman who lives next door to the home had to be evacuated but will be ok.
