APSO deputies receive award for life saving effort

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Two Ascension Parish Sheriff Deputies received an award for lifesaving efforts in the line of duty.

Deputy Brian Hughes and Deputy Roman Barthelomew were presented with the awards during a staff meeting on Tuesday morning.

On November 7, Hughes responded to a traffic accident on I-10 where a vehicle left the roadway and traveled into a marshy woodline, becoming submerged due to flooding in the area.

Hughes was able to attach a wench to the vehicle to pull it out of the water. While moving the car, Hughes noticed screams of a trapped survivor. Hughes and fire personnel were able to rescue the vehicle's occupant.

On November 9, Barthelomew responded to reports of an overturned, submerged vehicle on I-10 near Sorrento. Barthelomew noticed someone in the car was trapped inside and was able to lift the car, giving the trapped person a pocket of air to use until authorities were able to extract them from the car.
