BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The suspect accused in a shooting on Thanksgiving Day has been booked into prison in Plaquemine.

Jerome Gray, 38, was arrested Wednesday night in the Sherwood Forest area of Baton Rouge by U.S. Marshals with the help of Plaquemine Police.

"I'm completely innocent, I just want to let it be known that I wasn't running because I was guilty," said Gray while walking into prison Thursday.

Gray is charged with second-degree murder for his involvement in shooting and killing Derick Askins, 27, on Canal Street near LA 1 about 9 p.m. on November 26.

Police Chief Kenny Payne said Askins was dead when officers arrived to investigate the shooting.

"A search warrant of his cell phone was conducted, and we were pinging his cell phone on towers in the area, locating them to where he was at," said Payne.

Gray was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Wednesday before being taken to back to Iberville Parish on Thursday.
