BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - It was all but a foregone conclusion. Report after report indicated that long time LSU Head Coach Les Miles was out. The Mad Hatter's era was to come to an end after the Texas A&M match up.
"Coming off the field into the press conference last night, the feeling was that we just watched the end of the movie," said Charles Hanagriff, Sports Director for The Eagle 98.1.
So, when Athletic Director Joe Alleva said, minutes after the game, that Miles was here to stay, it left even the most seasoned sports reporters scratching their heads.
"The fact that Joe Alleva took the podium 15 minutes after that game and said, I'm showing support for Les Miles; he's going to be our football coach moving forward. I think no one expected that," said sports talk show host Ronnie Rantz.
Despite the apparent discontent with the team's overall performance, news that Miles remains "Forever LSU" was welcomed by many fans who turned out in force on Saturday with signs, handshakes and chants of support. Hanagriff observed that fan support for Miles has never been as high as when the Coach's future was uncertain.
Meanwhile many on social media have lashed out at Alleva, angry at the negative press and how it played out. Both national and local sports commentators say the whole ordeal could have a significant impact on the program's future.
"How do you convince your assistant coaches, how do you convince the recruits that this isn't just a one year thing, that this is just a long term thing," said Rantz.
"I think the Devil is in the details I think there's a lot of things to be decided," said Hanagriff.
However, for now many fans say they're happy the rumors are laid to rest, at least for this season.
"You've got to have faith in Les Miles," mused one fan.
