BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - UPDATE: Louisiana State Police report that the two-month-old involved in this crash has died due to injuries sustained in the crash. The original story is below.
Louisiana State Police are investigating an early morning crash that claimed the life of a couple and left their 2-month old son in critical condition.
According to State Police, the accident happened just before 3 a.m. Saturday on I-10 near Bluebonnet Boulevard.
Investigators learned that a Freightliner box truck driven by 56-year-old Christopher Stewart was traveling Westbound on I-10 when he pulled to the right shoulder of the road to use his cell phone.
As Stewart was re-entering the interstate, a F-150 driven by 20-year-old Joshua Claverie was driving in the right lane. For unknown reasons, Claverie was unable to avoid the Freightliner and crashed into the rear of the truck.
The passenger in the F-150, 22-year-old Jayla Young, who was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office.
Claverie, who was also wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center where he died soon after arrival.
Young and Claverie's 2-month-old son was also taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.
Stewart suffered minor injuries in the crash. He voluntarily submitted to an alcohol breath test but no trace of alcohol was found.
The crash remains under investigation.
