One dead after Thanksgiving Day shooting in Plaquemine

PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - Police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead Thursday night.

The Plaquemine Police Department reported it happened on Canal Street near LA 1 around 9 p.m.

The victim was identified as Derick Askins, 27.

Police Chief Kenny Payne said Askins was dead when officers arrived to investigate the shooting.

"He had been the victim of a shooting once before," Payne said. "He was shot in the leg several years ago in an altercation. They were gambling in the area, there was an altercation and then he got shot in the leg."

Authorities do not believe this shooting is connected to the one that happened years ago.

Detectives have not yet identified a suspect or established a motive.
