BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Police have arrested a teen in connection with a shooting that sent a 19-year-old woman to the hospital Tuesday evening.
The Baton Rouge Police Department reported a 16-year-old boy was booked into a juvenile detention center on charges of negligent injuring and juvenile in possession of a firearm.
Because of his age, the suspect's name was not released. However, if the suspect is tried as an adult, his name would then be made public.
Cpl. Don Coppola with BRPD said officers were called out to the parking lot of the Waffle House near College Drive and Corporate Avenue at 5:30 p.m. after a woman was found in a car suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.
Coppola added detectives eventually learned the shooting happened on Florida Street near North Foster Drive. According to reports, the woman was sitting in the front passenger seat and the teen was sitting behind her. Investigators believe he accidentally fired a handgun he was holding.
The victim remains stable at a Baton Rouge hospital, but her exact condition is unknown. She was initially taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her name was not given.
