BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) is encouraging Baton Rouge Area residents to participate in Small Business Saturday, this Saturday, November 28, by visiting locally-owned retailers in the Capital Region.
"The Baton Rouge Area is home to a wide array of quality, locally-owned retailers. Small businesses form the backbone of our regional economy," said Adam Knapp, president and CEO of BRAC. "BRAC is calling on area residents to make a holiday resolution to shop at local businesses for as much of their holiday shopping as possible, as well as throughout the coming year."
According to BRAC, within the Capital Region, small businesses were responsible for more than $42.3 billion in sales in 2013, with firms with fewer than ten employees accounting for $12.4 billion.
Those who participate in Small Business Saturday are encouraged to use #SmallBiz on social media. The Downtown Development District and BRAC will share "small business selfies" taken by shoppers, small business owners and staff throughout the day to highlight some of the region's small businesses.
Small Business Saturday was founded in 2010 by American Express to support small businesses and keep communities thriving. The goal is to help small businesses increase their exposure during the post-Thanksgiving shopping weekend, one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.
