Jury convicts man of murder in deadly heroin overdose trial

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man was found guilty of murder Thursday night for giving his girlfriend a deadly dose of heroin in 2013.

District Attorney Hillar Moore said Jarret McCasland, 26, of Denham Springs, was convicted of second-degree murder. An East Baton Rouge Parish jury handed down the verdict.

Flavia Cardenas, 19, died from a heroin overdose in July 2013.

McCasland faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole or probation.

"Hopefully those who have heroin problems will seek help for their addiction and those who would consider distributing or administering heroin or other deadly drugs will consider the possibility of facing life imprisonment before doing such," Moore said.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 11, 2016. Judge Don Johnson will hand down McCasland's sentence.
