Jury selection begins in deadly heroin overdose murder trial

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Jury selection began Monday in a murder trial in connection with a deadly heroin overdose.

Jarret McCasland, 26, of Denham Springs, is accused of giving his girlfriend, Flavia Cardenas, 19, a deadly dose of heroin in July 2013.

McCasland was indicted by a grand jury on a second-degree murder charge.

Judge Don Johnson is presiding over the case.

If convicted of second-degree murder, McCasland faces life in prison.
