Teacher accused of sex with students set for motions hearing

PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - A former teacher accused of having sex with students is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Keavin Keith, 30, of Plaquemine, will go before a judge for a motions hearing in Iberville Parish.

He is accused of having a sexual relationship with students at MSA West Academy in Plaquemine. Authorities say he fathered the child of one of the teenagers associated with the investigation.

He was indicted by a grand jury in July on five counts of felony carnal knowledge and 30 counts of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student. Later that month, he pleaded not guilty to all charges.

A trial date has not been set. The Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office reported Keith is out on bond. His bond was set at $100,000.

The Iberville Parish District Attorney's Office said if convicted, Keith could face up to 50.5 years behind bars.

According to Sheriff Brett Stassi Sr., one of Keith's former students reported on May 18 that the two of them had a sexual relationship while she was still a student at MSA-West Academy, where he was a teacher. Keith was arrested later that night.

Stassi also stated the investigation revealed Keith was allegedly having sexual relations with two other students. The alleged victims are 15 and 16 years old.

The sheriff added the results from the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab showed Keith fathered the child of one of the victims associated with the investigation.

Keith was a teacher of the year at MSA-West Academy.

Officials added Keith has no prior arrests. He had been a teacher in the parish school system for six years.
