LHSAA Football Playoff brackets released

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - From top seeds U-High, Lutcher, Riverside and Kentwood to winless East Iberville and Mentorship Academy, 50 Sportsline area teams are in the 2015 LHSAA Football playoffs announced Sunday with the release of the nine brackets. The defending select school Division II champion Cubs and the Kangaroos of non-select Class 1A received first round byes, while Lutcher will host 32-seed Avoyelles in Class 3A and Riverside is matched with 16-seed Northlake Christian in Division III.

Ten Sportsline schools are in the Class 5A bracket, including #2 Zachary, which will host #31 Sulphur and #5 Scotlandville, which lost to the Broncos on a goal line fumble on the game's final play. The Hornets host #28 Sam Houston. St. Amant's win over Dutchtown in week ten earned the Gators a #10 seed and first round home game with #23 Covington, while the Griffins' loss d ropped them to a #18 seed, sending them on the road to #15 Ruston. 24-seed East Ascension, #25 Live Oak, #30 Denham Springs and #32 Central are also facing first round road trips.

In Class 4A #6 Assumption, #10 Franklinton and #12 Plaquemine are the only local teams starting at home. Woodlawn (at Carencro), Livonia (at LaGrange) and Loranger (at Lakeshore) all begin play with road games. Sportsline area schools make up nine of the schools in Class 3A, eight more in Class 2A and six in Division III.

The only head-to-head matchup of local teams in the first round is in Division IV, where last year's runner up Southern Lab the 6-seed hosts #11 St. John. In addition to U-High and Kentwood, Catholic High (#6 in Division I paired with #3 Brother Martin) and Parkview Baptist (#4 in Division II paired with #5 St. Louis) also have a week off before starting postseason play. White Castle also has a first round bye as the #6 seed in Class 1A.

In addition to the four top seeds, St. Thomas Aquinas joined Zachary as a #2 seed, joining #4 Madison Prep, #5 St. Charles Catholic, #8 Episcopal and #11 Dunham in Division III. The Tigers are the only local team in that bracket that has to travel on the first weekend, facing #6 Calvary Baptist in Shreveport. St. Michael is also a #11 seed in Division II, traveling to Lafayette to face 6-seed Teurlings Catholic.
