LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A Livingston Parish contractor was arrested Tuesday by the Attorney General's Office for theft, fraud and forgery.
James Brewer, 46, was arrested and charged with one count each of felony theft, residential contractor fraud and forgery.
Brewer, of Denham Springs, owns the Brewer Construction Group, LLC. which investigators found had closed while looking into a victim's claim. He is accused of taking $3,294.52 for a construction project's down payment and failing to do the work.
Brewer signed a contract in February that said he would "supply stamped engineered foundation plans, labor, equipment and materials." However, after getting the down payment, Brewer supplied the plans and failed to supply the other things required.
According to the AG's office, Brewer then became unreachable which led the victim to reach out to the engineering company listed on the plans. The victim discovered that the company never worked for Brewer and were not the ones to put their professional engineering seal on the design documents.
The investigators with the AG's office, who had found out the construction company had closed, also found out that Brewer had only become a licensed construction contractor in August and was not licensed when the offenses took place.
Brewer was booked into the Livingston Parish Jail. He faces up to 10 years in prison for each charge.
