Two educators in South Louisiana each received a national award and cash prize from a billionaire on Wednesday.

Plaquemine High Principal Chandler Smith and Port Allen Middle's Dean of Students Jessica Major each received the 2015 Milken Educator Award and a $25,000 check with no strings attached.

Lowell Milken, chairman and co-Founder of the Milken Family Foundation, presented the two people with their awards and checks in front of school-wide assemblies at both Plaquemine High School and Port Allen Middle School.

"Thank you for making education your chosen profession," said Milken. "You're positively impacting hundreds of young people's lives.  Congratulations!"

Only about 40 educators across the country will be presented with the prestigious honor. The award has been given to outstanding elementary and secondary educators since 1987.
