BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man died Monday morning after being hit by a vehicle during a crash in East Baton Rouge Parish.
The Louisiana State Police is investigating a two-vehicle crash involving pedestrian that happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday on US 190 west of US 61.
LSP's initial investigation showed that 22-year-old Delvonte Wiley, of Port Allen, was driving westbound on US 190 in a 2000 GMC Sierra which was towing a 2005 GMC Yukon. Troopers say Wiley came to a stop in a left lane to allow 53-year-old Timothy Bird, of Port Allen, to check on the two strap between the two vehicles.
During that time, 33-year-old Chauntel Barnett, of Denham Springs, was also driving westbound in a 2006 Toyota Corolla. Barnett attempted to steer around the two stopped vehicles, but ended up striking the Yukon causing it to hit Bird.
Bird was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Both drivers, Wiley and Barnett, had their seat belts on and were not injured.
Troopers do not believe impairment was a factor, but toxicology samples were taken from both drivers.
Wiley was issued a citation for simple obstruction of a highway of commerce.
The investigating into the crash is ongoing.
