BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Department has made two arrests in connection with two separate cases from earlier this year.
Cedrick Smith, 19, was arrested in connection with the August 19 murder of 20-year-old Artez Hamilton. The case was the subject of a recent WAFB Crime Stoppers segment.
According to deputies, the shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m. in the 4300 block of Southpark Drive. Artez was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died while in surgery.
Deputies say they received information that Hamilton arranged a meeting with an unknown man or men to trade two assault-style rifles for two handguns. Witnesses later identified Smith as a man seen running away from the scene.
Smith turned himself into police on Friday evening and was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where he has been charged with illegal use of a weapon and second degree murder.
Detectives also arrested a man in connection with a double shooting on September 22 that left one man dead and another injured.
Deputies say the shooting happened at approximately 11:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of Jade Avenue. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered the victim, 28-year-old Henry McGuffey III and another man shot. McGuffey was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim survived his injuries.
Detectives say they received numerous Crime Stoppers tips stating that a man named "George" shot the two victims because of an ongoing dispute.
The suspect was later identified by a witness as 20-year-old George Stevenson Jr.
Stevenson was located at his residence Friday evening and arrested without incident. He has been booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison where he has been charged with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.
