Man dies after 18-wheeler allegedly ignores red light

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana State Police troopers say a man died after an 18-wheeler ran a red light, causing a crash.

LSP officials say 49-year-old Gustavo Morales Gomez, of Loredo, TX was traveling southbound on US 190, preparing to make a U-turn onto US 190 northbound.

Gomez allegedly ignored a red light as his tractor trailer entered into the northbound travel lanes of US 190, directly into the path of a Chevrolet Metro. An LSP report says the driver of the Chevrolet crashed head-on into the right side of the 18-wheeler's trailer. The Chevrolet driver, whose name is being withheld at this time, was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

Gomez was charged with ignoring traffic control and negligent homicide. He was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash.
