Baton Rouge tennis team scores national championship

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Baton Rouge women's tennis team is home from the USTA National Championships at Indian Wells, California that took place October 16 through 18.

They have packed the national title in their luggage. Team members know each other and play at the BREC Highland Road Park Tennis Center.

Captain Melissa Johnson, Co-Captain Ellen Martinez, Rita Little, Lora McNutt, Jessica Nicole Dinh, Lisa Marie Raiford, Melissa Coles Thompson, Cindy Kelley, and Laura Wilson comprise the team.

The USTA is the league in which the women play, and it means their victory places them above some 13,000 participants in the championship series. There are 865,000 members of the league nationwide.

To grab their title, our Baton Rouge team defeated a team from Tualatin, Oregon, 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Baton Rouge
team first defeated Columbia, Maryland's team 2-1 in the semifinals. They also won their round-robin flight on Friday and Saturday.

Now that they hold the National Championship, time to prepare a defense next year. Good luck to our Baton Rouge Women's USTA National Champs!
