BRPD officer arrested, charged with domestic abuse strangulation

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Baton Rouge Police Department officer has been arrested and charged with domestic abuse battery, according to court documents.

The documents show that 33-year-old Melvin Cosey was arrested Wednesday.

He has been charged with two counts of domestic abuse battery (strangulation). Police say Cosey had two separate altercations at his home with a victim on Oct. 15 and Oct. 17 that ended with physical abuse.

According to an arrest warrant, Cosey threatened to kill the victim on two occasions. He is accused of shoving the victim to the ground and placing his foot on the face of the victim. He is also accused of grabbing the victim by the throat and shoving the victim against a wooden fence.

The warrant for Cosey's arrest was issued Wednesday.

He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Wednesday afternoon. No bond has been set at this time.

A protective order filed in Family Court states that the alleged abuse has occurred for many years. The victim claims the abuse was also reported by a family member to a supervisor at the Baton Rouge Police Department in June 2015.

A media representative for the Baton Rouge Police Department has declined to comment about the investigation.

Cosey graduated from the Baton Rouge Police Academy in 2013. He has been with the police department for just over two years and has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
