GREENSBURG, LA (WAFB) - One person is dead after a high speed crash in St. Helena Parish.
Louisiana State Police say that 23 year-old Damien Jerard Carriere, of Greensburg, La., was killed in a single vehicle crash on LA 1042 west of Greensburg just after 10 a.m. Wednesday.
According to troopers, Carriere was driving a Ford Crown Victoria westbound on LA 1042. They are still unsure what caused the vehicle to go off on the right side of the roadway.
Troopers say Carriere over-corrected back to the left, causing the Crown Victoria to begin to turn counter clockwise while still going off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle then became airborne after hitting a ditch embankment.
While in the air, Carriere's Crown Victoria hit a tree, splitting the vehicle into two.
Carriere was not wearing a seat belt and sustained severe injuries. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the St. Helena Parish Coroner's Office.
Troopers currently do not think impairment was a factor in this crash, but a blood sample was sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for toxicology testing.
