LIVINGSTON, LA (WAFB) -

Officials are celebrating the completion of a $26.5 million construction project on I-12 in Livingston Parish.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) held a news conference Wednesday morning to talk about the widening of I-12 from Walker Road to west of Satsuma Road.

The project is a part of the Geaux Wider program, an initiative that's been going on for several years and is aimed at improving safety and mobility along a 20-mile stretch of I-10 and I-12.

"We're going to keep pushing forward,” Sherri Lebas, secretary of DOTD, said. “This is our Geaux Wider program and our vision is to one day have six lanes all the way from Baton Rouge to Slidell."

Part of I-12 was expanded from two to three lanes in each direction from Walker to west of Satsuma.

The work began in February of last year.
