Victim identified in fatal shooting

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating an early morning shooting that left one man dead.

Police say the shooting happened around 2 a.m. Monday in the 10000 block of Avenue H.

When police arrived at the scene, they found 24-year-old Gerald Penny near the corner of Avenue H and Woodcock Street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Detectives say there are no suspects or motive at this time.

This homicide is the 73rd for the parish so far this year. There were a total of 73 homicides for the entirety of 2014. Nine of the 73 homicides this year have been classified as either justified or negligent shootings, leaving a total of 64 murder investigations. There were a total of 65 murders for the entirety of 2014.

The latest shooting happened in the 70807 zip code. The Avenue H shooting marks the 9th homicide for that area this year.

Law enforcement across the parish are still investigating a total of 34 open murder investigations that occurred this year.
