ETHEL, LA (WAFB) - An elderly man was killed after the truck he was driving flipped on a highway after hitting a bridge rail and was hit by another truck, according to officials.
Louisiana State Police reported Jimmie Tant, 69, of Norwood, died in a crash in East Feliciana Parish late Sunday night. Troopers said it happened on LA 19 north of LA 955 near Ethel shortly after 10 p.m.
Tpr. Bryan Lee with LSP said the initial investigation showed Tant was driving north on LA 19 in a 2001 Chevrolet S-10 when, for unknown reasons, lost control and hit the side of a bridge.
He added the driver of a 2003 Ford F-150 headed in the opposite direction was not able to stop in time and slammed into the passenger side of the flipped pickup.
According to Lee, Tant was properly buckled, but did not survive the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Feliciana Parish Coroner's Office.
Lee stated the other driver was also wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries in the crash.
Investigators do not suspect impairment was a factor in the crash and the driver of the truck that hit Tant's truck was not cited.
However, per normal procedure for deadly crashes on Louisiana highways, blood samples were taken from both drivers and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
