LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A busy Thursday night for prep football with several games that went right down to the wire, including the big Livingston Parish rivalry between Live Oak and Denham Springs.
It was the district opener for both 5A playoff contenders who came in with winning records. The Yellow Jackets were trying to get to 5-1, while Live Oak came in 3-2 and took a 7-0 first half lead.
In the late fourth quarter, Denham Springs had gone ahead 14-7, but Live Oak sophomore Khalil Smith crashed into the end zone to make it 14-13. The Eagles were an extra point away from possibly forcing overtime, but the PAT sailed wide left and was no good.
Live Oak needed a miracle to pull it out. The prayer was answered with an on-sides kick.
Live Oak drove into field goal range with just over a minute to play and Nathan Holiday made it counts. The Eagles went in front 16-14 and their sideline goes crazy.
Holiday squibs the ensuing kickoff so the Jackets couldn't get a big return, but Tyre Golmond was going before Eagles' Landon Roberts made the game-saving tackle.
Denham Springs still had time. Quarterback Torez Kinchen had De'Juante Edwards deep behind the secondary and his pass looked like a touchdown, but Cade Guillory got a piece of the ball and tipped away for another game-saving play.
It came down to the 4th down and Kinchen gave one last heave in the direction of De'Juante Edwards again, only this time the Eagles had him double covered and Live Oaks' Junior Edwards won the jump ball coming down with the game-saving interception.
Live Oak won 16-14 to improve to 4-2, and Denham Springs dropped to 4-2.
Madison Prep also hung on to win 21-20 over Northeast to stay unbeaten at 6-0. Northeast dropped to 4-2.
Kentwood also won 38-13 over St. John, and Christian Life beat Capitol 27-26.
