WEST BATON ROUGE PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A man accused of breaking into at least five churches in West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee parishes said Thursday he is responsible for at least one of the burglaries.
West Baton Rouge Sheriff's detectives said a Crime Stopper's tip that came in after surveillance video was released led to the arrest of Chris Webb. He apologized Thursday in front of cameras as he was hauled off to jail.
Church surveillance video from St. Paul's Baptist Church in Port Allen showed two men who appear to be sweating inside the sanctuary in the middle of the night.
Detectives say in late July the men stole an estimated $15,000 in video and audio equipment from three churches in Port Allen. They say Chris Webb was the guy in the video who walked from the back of church pulling his undershirt up.
Cheryl: Mr. Webb, did you break into those churches?
Cheryl: You broke into one of the churches? Which one?
Webb: The one I'm admitting to right now. The one I'm admitting to. That's the one I broke into, and I apologize for what I did, and I hope y'all forgive me. But I did not take anything from the church. I went in and didn't take nothing.
Captain Kevin Cyrus with West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said tips from the public and a distinct tattoo on Webb's arm helped detectives crack the case.
"Detective Kenny Young had a very good observation. He noticed a very distinguishing mark on the subject inside the church from the video," said Cyrus.
Webb said he only broke into St. Paul's, but denies having anything to do with the break-ins at any other churches in West Baton Rouge or Pointe Coupee Parish. As for why he did it and who the other man is in the surveillance video.
Webb: Man, I had nothing better to do. I was just like caught up in the moment, you know what I'm saying.
Cheryl: Who's the other guy in the surveillance video?
Webb: Other guy in the surveillance video? I do not know.
Cheryl: You don't know the other guy who helped you break into the church, allegedly?
Webb: I do know him, but I don't want to give his name out because I ain't got no right.
Webb was booked into West Baton Rouge Parish Jail and charged with simple burglary of a religious building. Authorities believe more charges and another arrest could come soon.
