GIBSON, LA (WAFB) - Authorities in Terrebonne Parish are on the scene of a reported explosion at Williams Gas Plant in Gibson. The Terrebonne Parish sheriff released new information Thursday afternoon on those killed and injured in the explosion.
Company officials confirmed there was an explosion and fire at Williams Partners' natural gas facility around 11 a.m. They added the facility was not operational at the time, but four contractors were injured while performing scheduled maintenance at the plant and are being treated by emergency responders.
"The severity of those injuries cannot be confirmed at this time," a plant spokeswoman said in a written release. "The 13 Williams employees stationed at the facility have been accounted for and were not injured."
"We are deeply saddened by reports of serious injuries to personnel working at the scene," Warren Toups, Williams operations manager, said in released statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families at this very critical time."
The names of the victims have not been released.
Officials added once the area is secured, the investigation will begin to determine the cause of the explosion.
