GONZALES, LA (WAFB) -

The Gonzales Police Department and the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office hosted a training academy for young adults looking to enter law enforcement.

The Explorer Academy was the first of its type in Ascension Parish in fifteen years. Cadets participated in a week of training and housing at the Lamar-Dixon Trademart building. The future LEOs began their days at 4:45 a.m. with physical training and classes where they were taught Louisiana law by officers from several agencies across the state.

The cadets described their week as "eventful", saying that there was "an abundance of education and team-work training."

A majority of the academy staffers were able to give back to the young adults, as they too went through the Explorer program when they were younger.

Gonzales Detective Jacob Ory says that he hopes the academy will grow and be opened up to agencies around Louisiana.

Any teenager who would like to attend an Explorer Academy in 2016 can contact the Gonzales Police Department by calling 225-647-9575.
