BAYOU SORREL, LA (WAFB) - Louisiana State Troopers are investigating the death of a bicyclist who was hit and killed by a vehicle Saturday night.
According to state Troopers the accident happened just before 8 p.m on LA 75 in Iberville Parish.
The victim, 23-year-old Brandi Mendoza was riding her bike southbound on LA 75 when a SUV driven by 41-year-old Bradley Poston approached her from behind and the right side of the SUV hit Mendoza and her bike.
Mendoza was transported to Ocshner Hospital in Plaquemine where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators don't believe impairment is a factor in the case but a routine toxicology test was taken from Mendoza and Poston and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
State Police say Mendoza was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and was wearing dark colored clothing. Her bicycle also did not have the required white light on the front and red light on the back.
State Troopers want to remind cyclists that they can not assume that motorists see them and should take simple precautions such as wearing a helmet and reflective materials. Cyclists should also remain as close to the right side of the road as possible and obey all traffic laws.
