Police arrest suspect in deadly North 23rd shooting following tip

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in September was arrested Thursday night after investigators received a tip via Crime Stoppers.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Prison reported Michael Collins, 39, was booked Friday morning on charges of second-degree murder, illegal use of a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Officials said Collins was found on North Ardenwood Drive after getting the tip.

Collins is accused of killing Levi Alexander, 28, who was shot to death on North 23rd Street near I-110 and Plank Road on September 14. Detectives said Alexander was shot several times and found lying in the street.

Investigators said a surveillance camera from a nearby store captured the homicide on video. They added there was also audio of the killing.

According to the arrest warrant, Collins has a violent criminal history with 20 prior arrests.

If convicted of second-degree murder, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole or probation.
