Dominant 3rd quarter leads No. 7 Georgia past Southern, 48-6

FCS Southern played competitive football for a half, but No. 7 Georgia used four touchdowns on four possessions to run away from the Jaguars 48-6 in their first-ever game with an SEC school.

Heisman Trophy contender Nick Chubb had 15 carries for 131 yards and two touchdowns, plus a 24-yard scoring catch to lead the Bulldogs.

Southern held Georgia's running game in check during the first half, and only trailed 17-6 late in the second quarter after Lenard Tillery's 16-yard touchdown run.

Tillery finished the game with 75 yards rushing on 19 carries, as the Southern offense dominated time of possession 35:35 to 24:25 in the game.

However, Austin Howard was just 8 of 19 passing for 69 yards, as the Bulldogs (4-0) outgained Southern (2-2) 532-184 yards of total offense.

Devon Gales, a sophomore from Central High School, was taken to a local hospital in Athens after suffering a spinal injury in a serious head-on collision and had to be carted off the field.

Southern has the next week off and will travel to play Alabama A&M on October 10.
