Yelp! Baton Rouge is in need of at least 20 foster homes for dogs at their shelter.
The organization is currently using a home behind the old Greco's Pet Store on the corner of Lanier and Greenwell Springs. They've been able to use that space, rent free, since 2010. But, because the Greco property is for sale, Yelp! is now looking for another home.
Director Jessica Card said they are starting that search now so they don't panic when the property does sell. In the meantime, that means they need to find foster homes for their dogs. Card said they have a total of 40 at the facility.
"Half with potential fosters that we've talked to. About 20 more we really need to find a place for," she said.
Foster families will care for the dogs on a daily basis until the dog is adopted out.
"Want to get them in safe, loving environments," said Card.
Assistant Director Beverly Theriot said even when the dogs are in foster homes, Yelp! is still responsible for their vet bills and providing food.
Theriot said that is why fundraisers are so important. They also hope to continue raising money while they are in transition to help fund a future location.
"Our first priority is the dogs," said Card. "No matter what we just want the dogs to be safe."
They hope to have all 40 dogs placed by October 5. They will then begin clearing out the office.
"Yelp! is not going away. We are not closing. We're just transitioning."
