GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - A huge celebration in Ascension Parish Wednesday marked the expansion of another high school.
School board members and state and local dignitaries broke ground on a brand new East Ascension Freshman Academy.
It is the second of three schools in the parish to build a special wing to help ninth graders get acquainted with high school.
East Ascension freshman currently go to class in a temporary building known as "The Village." The current practice field is being relocated to make room for the new building.
"They've never really had a place to call their own, and I believe having this building for them will make them feel very very special," said Traci McCorkle, principal at East Ascension High. "It will give them a place to feel home and a place where they can feel comfortable and that can only aid them and benefit them in their transition to high school."
The Spartan cheerleaders and marching band were there to help kick off construction.
The new academy is set to open next school year.
