3 Baton Rouge parking lots transformed into 'parklets' for a day

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Mid City Redevelopment hosted an event which transformed three Baton Rouge parking lots into temporary parks on Friday, September 18, offering activities for kids and adults in the Mid City area.

Baton Rouge General's Park(ing) Day includes a focus on adult health and fitness from and shifted gears to kids' activities after 2 p.m.

Baton Rouge General, Whole Foods, Agame Yoga and BREC provided free yoga classes, adult recess, chef demos, healthy snacks, and community garden planting.

"We're committed to this city, to health, and to bringing this city things they don't have now," said a Parking Day representative.

One "parklet" was at the Baton Rouge General Hospital parking lot on Florida Blvd. from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Baton Rouge General Transforms Mid City Parking Lot into Park for a Day

The second "parklet" was at Aladdin's Lamps from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Aladdin's Lamps, located at 2648 Government Street, along with Brew Ha Ha and the LSU Museum of Art transformed a parking lot into an outdoor library. There will be free coffee and lemonade to enjoy while reading a book from a Little Free Library. Help stock the libraries with a book donation, Free cake balls with donation.

The third "parklet" was at Radio Bar from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Attendees enjoyed a Pop-Up Art Gallery outside Radio Bar on Friday with artwork by Mid City artists on display. They also made pieces of art to add to the gallery. Live music by Atomic Pop Shop, and belly dancing from Violet Lotus Studio were provided.

Park(ing) Day began in San Francisco 10 years ago as a way to promote discussion around the need for green spaces in urban areas.  Since then, it's been expanded to cities across the country.
