LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - Lafayette Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened Saturday evening.
Officers responded to reports of a wanted suspect, 37-year-old Robert Stewart on the 100 block of Sonny Street at 6 p.m. As they approached the residence, one of six men standing outside began to run away. Officers gave chase and followed him behind several houses.
Police noticed that the suspect was in possession of a pistol as the chase led to the 200 block of Soulier Street. The suspect, later learned to be 22-year-old Kevin Lewis, was ordered to drop the gun. When he didn't, an officer fired at least two shots, hitting the suspect.
Lewis was arrested and transported to an area hospital. Officers still at the Sonny Street residence arrested Robert Stewart on an outstanding warrant, and took the remaining four men in for questioning.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
