LSU tailback Leonard Fournette rushed for a career best 159 yards on a career high 28 carries and scored all three touchdowns, as the 14th-ranked Tigers held on to beat No. 25 Mississippi State 21-19 in Starkville Saturday night.
Fournette gave his team a 14-0 first quarter lead with a 1-yard touchdown out of the Wildcat formation and a 26-yarder when he hurdled a would-be MSU tackler.
LSU (1-0, 1-0) led 14-3 at the half and still had a 21-6 advantage after the sophomore from New Orleans scored his third touchdown in the third quarter.
MSU senior Dak Prescott engineered two late touchdown drives, but misfired on a critical two-point conversion attempt, leaving the Tigers with their final margin of victory.
Brandon Harris threw for 71 yards in the victory, but Travin Dural had two TDs in the first half wiped out by penalties, a 37 yard touchdown pass from Harris and an 89 yard touchdown run.
The Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1) missed a 52 yard yard field goal attempt on the game's final play.
This was the first full game LSU has played so far in 2015 after the season opener against McNeese got canceled due to weather on Sept. 4.
