LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - The Lafayette Police Department is investigation an officer-involved shooting that happened Tuesday.
Police responded to an attempted suicide in the 200 block of Colonial Drive around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Officers saw a woman running towards the home when they arrived and went after her into a bedroom in the house.
There was a 70-year-old man inside the room who officers started talking to after removed the woman from the room. She was identified later as a family member.
The man pulled out a handgun and was shot once by one of the officers. He was taken to a local hospital and remains in critical condition.
The Lafayette police officer who was involved in the shooting is a 25-year veteran of the department. According to the Lafayette Police, the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave as per departmental policy.
The Lafayette Police Department's Officer Involved Shooting Team is working the investigation into the shooting.
