BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - State police say that a head-on crash in Washington Parish killed one, and injured five Saturday morning.
According to police reports, a van was traveling southbound on LA 21 at about 9:00 a.m. when the driver went into the northbound lane in order to pass a car in a no-passing zone. At the same time, a car carrying 73-year-old Jerry Koppenol, of Covington, was traveling in the southbound lane.
The driver of the car carrying Koppenol swerved to avoid the van, but collided head-on in the northbound shoulder.
State Police say Koppenol died on the scene. The driver and three other passengers were moderately injured in the crash. The driver of the van was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
Everyone was properly restrained, and troopers do not expect impairment to be a factor in this crash.
A toxicology test was sent to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
