BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Louisiana state corrections officer is behind bars following a months-long investigation after allegedly raping an inmate taken to the hospital.
The victim, a Louisiana Department of Corrections Inmate, was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center on May 4 for having seizures. The victim was taken to his room by two guards. Reports from the Baton Rouge Police Department Office say that one of the guards left the room at about 2 a.m.
The other guard, 58-year-old Michael Gaiter, removed the victim's cuffs, allowing him to use the restroom. The victim says that when he returned to the room, Gaiter was sitting in a chair with his gun in his lap, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
The report also states Gaiter said "I got you now" to the inmate before raping him. Afterwards, Gaiter allegedly showed the victim pictures of his family on his cell phone, despite the victim saying that he had never met Gaiter prior to the incident.
The report says that the victim reported Gaiter the next morning when he woke up, telling another guard he was raped.
Gaiter was charged with malfeasance in office, and aggravated rape. He is being held in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a $40,000 bond.
