New D.A.R.E. officer assigned for St. Mary Parish

ST MARY PARISH, LA (WAFB) - The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office announced a Morgan City woman as the parish's new D.A.R.E. officer on Tuesday.

Karla Meranto-Cornes accepted the position that oversees anti-drug efforts for about 500 fifth grade students across the parish.

Meranto-Cornes graduated from Morgan City High School, and earned a degree from Nicholls State in Child and Family Social Services. She served as a volunteer for CASA for two years, as a reserve police officer with the Berwick Police Department for 13 years, and was employed by the Office of Juvenile Justice for six years.

"I am excited and blessed to have the opportunity to teach D.A.R.E. in St. Mary Parish School," said Meranto-Cornes. "The D.A.R.E. Curriculum is such an amazing program that provides children with the skills needed in making decisions that will have positive consequences in their lives rather than negative consequences."

The D.A.R.E. program was founded in 1983. More information one program can be found at their website HERE.
