BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Coach Les Miles' announcement of the captains for this year's football team was lost in all the drama created by Monday's delayed game-week news conference.
Former Warrick Dunn Award winner Kendell Beckwith from East Feliciana and five other Tigers were named 2015 team captains in a vote of their teammates.
Beckwith, a junior linebacker, was joined on defense by cornerback Tre'davious White. White had already earned the distinction of being awarded the 18 jersey traditionally worn by the Tigers' unquestioned leader.
Bookend tackles Vadal Alexander and Jerald Hawkins were selected as the team's offensive captains, while punter Jamie Keehn and deep snapper Reid Ferguson were named special teams captains.
"That's really a great group of leaders," said Miles after practice. "A great group of young men."
Alexander, Keehn and Ferguson are seniors, while White and Hawkins are also juniors like Beckwith.
This group will try to turn things around for LSU football coming off an 8-5 mark a year ago, which followed four straight double-digit win seasons dating back to 2010.
"I've been trying to do a great job of preparing myself, and I'm ready to go," said Beckwith.
